Supplies you'll need to crochet Squirtle
General supplies:
- Crochet hook 2,5 mm, I always use clover amour hooks for my projects!
- Sewing needle
- Stuffing
- Stitch marker
With Amigurumi you guage doesn’t matter much. Using smaller hook and yarn will make you finished Squirtle smaller, and bigger hook and yarn will make him bigger. Just make sure that your yarn and hook fits together and makes a tight fabric so the stuffing won’t show through!
With the recommended yarn below, your finished Squirtle will be about 12cm/5inches tall in his sitting position.
I reccomend Hobbii Rainbow cotton 8/4. This yarn is a 100% cotton and very nice to work with! With this yarn, I use a 2,5 mm hook (or a B-1 or C-2 should work too!). If Rainbow cotton is sold out, I can also recommend Friends cotton from Hobbii as a direct substitute.
- blue
- beige/pale yellow for the belly
- Brown and white for the shell
- a bit of black, white and magenta for eyes and face-features

Eyes
Start in black
The eye is worked around a chain. Start by chaining 4. The work starts in the 2nd chain from the hook.
Rnd 1: 2sc, 3sc in last chain, turn and continue work on the other side of the chain, sc, change color to magenta, 2inc, change color to black, 2sc, ss and FO.
Next connect white yarn to the side and make 4 slip stitches along the edge. Repeat on the other eye, but put the slip stitches on the opposite side of the eye so you have both a left and a right eye. Embroider a white highlight in the black part of the eye.
Assembly of your crochet Squirtle
Attach the head to the body. The body sits around round 19 of the head. Remember to stuff the body firmly before finishing the sewing.
Next attach the shell to the back of Squirtle. The increases we made in the head is the front of the face. The shell sits across the back (the widest part is placed horizontally). The placement is starting where the head meets the shell and down to about round 4 of the body. Remember to stuff the shell before sewing shut.
Next add the limbs. The legs sit between rounds 5-9, and the end of the leg sits close to the shield. The arms sit 3-4 rounds above the legs and again close to the shell.
Add the tail to the back of Squirtle on round 3 of the body. Be aware of what direction your spiral rolls.
Lastly attach the eyes on rounds 9-13 of the face with 3-3,5 stitches between them.
As a finishing touch, embroider a mouth, nostrils and eyebrows in black. Also embroider the pattern in the shell in a darker brown or black color.
